King Cakes are traditionally an oval shape to symbolize a unity of all faiths. Each cake is decorated with the royal colors of Mardi Gras: Purple representing Justice, Green representing Faith, and Gold representing Power. A small baby is hidden in each cake to symbolize the Baby Jesus. The small baby is said to bring luck and prosperity to whoever it finds. The name 'King Cake' derives from the Three Wise Men who came bearing gifts for the Baby Jesus. Traditionally the cake is served on King's Day (January 6) and lasts through out the Mardi Gras season.
